ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Friday that respect for women was vital for a civilized society.
“Unfortunately, women were tortured and imprisoned during dictatorships when they struggled for democracy,” he said while talking to a PPP delegation.
The delegation comprised PPP Women Wing Punjab president Samina Khalid Gurkhi, vice president Nasira Meo and general secretary Nargis Faiz Malik.
Bilawal said that the PPP took pride in the fact that Begum Nusrat Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had both struggled for democracy throughout their lives. “PPP always fulfilled the promises it made to women,” he said.
He said that former president Asif Ali Zardari had introduced the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) during the tenure of the last PPP government. “This was done so that the fruits of democracy could reach deserving women directly. The PPP government also carried out effective legislations against harassment of women,” he said.
Bilawal asked the PPP women leaders to strengthen the party and focus on increasing membership. “The future belongs to women. Women played a very important role in the victory of PPP candidate in by-election in Gilgit-Baltistan,” he said.
He said that women would always find that Bakhtawar and Asifa were with them. “It is necessary for women wing of the party to work hard for the rights of women,” the PPP chairman said.
Senator Sehar Kamran, Chaudhry Yasin, Syed Mir Muhammad and Najamud Din Khan also called on the PPP chairman and discussed party related matters and issues relating to the prevailing political situation.
